Chapter 12 Recovering from Injuries
Chapter 12 Recovering from Injuries
The next morning.
Xia Bing arrived at the clinic and pushed open Jing Ni's door.
Jingni was leaning against the headboard, holding a baby in her arms. When she saw him come in, her gaze was somewhat complicated.
"You've arrived."
Xia Bing nodded and placed the medicine on the table.
"This is medicine to regulate your body, three times a day."
Jingni glanced at the medicine bowl and whispered, "Thank you."
Xia Bing sat down on the stool by the bed, her gaze falling on the baby in her arms.
The baby was fast asleep, his little face was all wrinkled, and it was hard to tell what he looked like.
"How is the child?"
"Hmm." Jingni looked down at her daughter in her arms, her eyes softening. "She's very good, she doesn't cry much."
Xia Bing was silent for a moment, then asked, "What are your plans next?"
Jingni raised her head and looked at Xia Bing.
Her eyes were cool and aloof, yet somewhat lost.
"I don't know," she whispered. "The Net won't let me go, I... I have nowhere to go."
Xia Bing looked at her.
Jing Ni was a top-tier assassin of the Luo Wang organization, and she was constantly being hunted down after her defection.
With her child, she had nowhere to escape.
"You can stay here with me for now," Xia Bing said. "We'll make further plans after you've recovered."
Jing Ni was stunned for a moment.
"You...would you take me in?"
"I saved you, I can't just watch you die out there."
Jing Ni was silent for a moment, then whispered, "Why did you save me? Aren't you afraid the Luo Net will come after you?"
"Don't be afraid."
Xia Bing's tone was calm, but it exuded confidence.
Jingni looked at him, feeling a strange sensation in her heart.
This young man looked to be no more than twenty years old, yet his cultivation was unfathomable.
Moreover, his attitude was neither humble nor arrogant, as if everything was under control.
"What's your name?"
"Xia Bing."
"Xia Bing..." Jing Ni murmured, "I am Jing Ni."
"I know."
Jing Ni was taken aback: "You know?"
Xia Bing didn't explain, she just stood up.
"Take good care of yourself and let the doctor know if you need anything."
After saying that, he turned and left the room.
Jingni looked at his retreating figure, a hint of confusion in her eyes.
Does he know he is Jing Ni?
Then why save her?
Doesn't he know how terrifying the Net of Deception is?
……
For the next few days, Xia Bing visited Jing Ni at the clinic every day.
He didn't say much, just brought some medicine and food, and asked about her health.
Jingni gradually relaxed her attitude towards him.
This young man, though aloof, meant no harm.
And every time he came, he would bring some things the baby needed—swaddling clothes, goat milk, baby clothes…
These items were not common during the Warring States period, and Xia Bing had someone buy them from the largest shop in the city.
"You... know a lot about babies?"
On the fourth day, Jingni couldn't help but ask.
Xia Bing shook her head: "I don't know. I just asked the doctor, and he told me what I needed, so I bought it."
Jingni looked at him, feeling a strange sensation in her heart.
She was raised by the Luo Wang organization from a young age, and learned to kill, not to care for people.
The child's father is dead, and she is all alone, with no idea how to raise the child.
But Xia Bing... was helping her.
"Why did you help me?" Jing Ni asked again. "You don't need to answer, but I want to know."
Xia Bing remained silent for a moment.
"I don't know," he said. "Maybe it's because you needed help at the time."
Jing Ni was stunned for a moment.
This answer was simple and sincere.
She lowered her head and gently stroked the baby's cheek in her arms.
"Thanks."
……
The evening of the fifth day.
Xia Bing arrived at the clinic as usual, only to see Jing Ni holding a child and standing by the window.
The setting sun cast its rays upon her, softening the look of her profile.
She looked down at the baby in her arms, her eyes gentle, and the corners of her mouth slightly upturned.
Xia Bing was stunned for a moment.
This scene is completely different from the cold-blooded killer he was before.
"What are you looking at?"
Jingni turned her head and saw Xia Bing, a hint of panic flashing in her eyes.
"It's nothing."
She walked quickly back to the bedside and bent down to pretend to tidy the swaddling clothes.
Xia Bing walked to her side and glanced at the baby.
Is the child asleep?
"Um."
Xia Bing reached out, wanting to touch the baby's cheek.
Jing Ni instinctively wanted to back away, but stopped when she saw Xia Bing's movement.
Xia Bing gently touched the baby's cheek with her fingers; it was very soft and tender.
"So cute," he said.
Jingni looked at him, her eyes filled with complex emotions.
Do you like children?
"It's alright." Xia Bing withdrew her hand. "My mother took care of me like this when I was little."
Jingni was silent for a moment, then whispered, "I have no mother."
Xia Bing glanced at her but didn't say anything.
He knew about Jing Ni's background—an orphan raised by the Luo Wang organization, trained as an assassin from a young age, with no family or friends.
"From now on, you have a child," Xia Bing said.
Jingni raised her head and looked at him.
Xia Bing's gaze was calm, yet warm.
"You still have me," he said. "At least until you're fully recovered, I won't let anything happen to you."
Jing Ni was stunned.
She looked into Xia Bing's eyes and felt a pang of emotion.
Since the child's father died, she has been all alone, being hunted down, and has nowhere to go.
No one was willing to help her, and no one was willing to take her in.
But this young man was willing to bear the wrath of the net for her.
"you…"
"Get some rest," Xia Bing interrupted her. "I'll come see you again tomorrow."
After saying that, he turned and left.
Jingni watched his retreating figure, lowered her head, and gently hugged the baby tighter.
……
late at night.
The baby suddenly started crying.
Jingni quickly picked up the child and gently shook him, but the child continued to cry.
She was somewhat at a loss.
She didn't know why the child was crying, nor did she know what to do.
Just as I was getting anxious, the door was pushed open.
Xia Bing walked in.
"What's wrong?"
"She...she's crying, I don't know why." Jing Ni was a little flustered. "Is she hungry? Or feeling unwell?"
Xia Bing walked over and took the baby from her.
He gently patted the baby's back and then touched her forehead.
"He doesn't have a fever," he said. "He's probably just hungry."
"Hungry?" Jing Ni was taken aback. "But I already fed her..."
"She might not be getting enough to eat." Xia Bing handed the baby back to her. "Your body hasn't recovered yet, and you don't have enough breast milk. I'll go ask the doctor for some goat milk."
After saying that, he turned and left.
A moment later, Xia Bing returned with a bowl of warm goat milk.
Use this.
Jingni took the goat milk, somewhat at a loss.
"I...I won't feed him."
Xia Bing glanced at her and said, "Pour the milk into a spoon and feed her little by little."
Jingni did as instructed.
The baby stopped crying and obediently drank the goat milk.
"Drink slowly," Jingni said softly, her eyes full of tenderness.
Xia Bing stood aside, watching quietly.
This scene reminded him of his mother.
When he was sick as a child, his mother took care of him in the same way.
"Thank you," Jing Ni suddenly said. "Thank you."
Xia Bing shook her head: "You're welcome."
Jingni raised her head and looked at him.
"Why...why don't you ask about my past?"
"Say what you want to say, or don't say what you don't want to say," Xia Bing said. "I don't like prying into other people's privacy."
Jing Ni was silent for a moment, then said in a low voice, "I am an assassin from the Luo Wang... I have killed many people."
"I know."
Aren't you afraid of me?
"Don't be afraid." Xia Bing looked at her. "You are a mother now, not a killer."
Jing Ni was stunned.
She looked at Xia Bing, her eyes slightly moist.
From childhood to adulthood, no one has ever treated her like a human being.
Within the Net, she was merely a tool, a weapon.
But Xia Bing... treated her as an ordinary person, a mother.
"You... are strange," she said.
Xia Bing smiled and said, "Maybe."
He turned and walked to the door, then turned back and said, "Get some rest. I'll take you home tomorrow."
"Your home?"
"It's not convenient to stay at a clinic for an extended period," Xia Bing said. "My house has a yard, so you can focus on recovering."
After saying that, he closed the door and left.
Jingni looked in the direction he left, lowered her head, and gently kissed the baby's forehead.
"We have a home now," she whispered.
